I had to come by Beirut for a meeting on my way home. I got to walk along the ocean tonight at sunset. It was really beautiful, and these kids were out fishing with giant fishing poles.
It is hard to imagine this wonderful place being wracked by war. It was just about a year ago that Israel attacked, and I got a tour of the many bridges they blew up, which seem to have virtually no strategic value. The bitterness the attacks elicited will take years to forgive, if ever. Meanwhile, the Lebanese army is engaged with a fringe militant group just about 90 minutes from here, up in Tripoli, and they are blowing the hell out of each other.
How a place with such beautiful landscape, and such generous and friendly people, can get beat up (and beat its self up) on such a continuous basis I don't know--and I don't know that I will ever understand it.
