Oh Dear, Panjshir

We went on a road trip to Panjshir today. After the dust and congestion of Kabul, it was really nice to be able to get out of the city and breathe.

Panjshir was the home base of Massoud, one of the great warriors against both the Russians and the Taliban. Leading the Northern Alliance, he was assassinated just a few days before 9/11, and is considered a national hero.

The Panjshir Valley is stunningly beautiful. The valley is topped by snow-capped mountains, and a rushing river runs through it. This is what Afghanistan ought to be, and I hope that can be a model for the rest of the country. People are pleasant, it is safe, and all is well.
