Truly Senseless

Here is what the news article said:
11 dead in Afghan attacks
At least 11 people have been killed in separate attacks in Afghanistan.
A man blew himself up at a provincial police headquarters in southeastern Afghanistan, killing three people and wounding eight others.
The incident involved two attackers, disguised as police officers, who approached the gates of the main police office in Khost and opened fire on police guards.
Officers returned fire, killing one attacker, and the second blew himself up.

What the article didn't say was that one of the people killed was a Municipal worker who was just out picking up trash, trying to make a living in a country that has an enormous unemployment rate, (to the point that a former presidential guard is now our janitor). That he was just making $4 a day. That he was part of our program, having been hired with the money we provided. That his death is just another useless loss in a country that has suffered 1000s of deaths and seems unable to break a cycle of violence, misery, and despair.

Damn it. He was just picking up trash. He was just trying to make a living. I don't understand. It is all so senseless.
