Kandahar

After a 6 month absence, I am back in Afghanistan. It is nice to be back, but it is different. Here are some random observations:
---I flew to Kandahar yesterday. It has a reputation for being a dangerous place. No wonder with all of those dang Canadians around, eh?
---Boeing 727s are incredible—I think they may fly forever. Insha’Allah.
---There was a guy on the plane brought in on a stretcher. They gave him the back row of seats, where he could stretch out if not lie down. He looked pretty beat up, with facial bruises, one leg in a cast and the other with clamps, and a blown off big toe that was not covered. Yikes…’and that little piggy got blown into dust’ seems kind of harsh.
---Kandahar is a poor place. A very poor place. People really deserve better than they get here. Meanwhile, the place is surrounded by the Taliban. Lovely. Poor place surrounded by crazy people.
---The good news is that Kandahar raises delightful white grapes that are like little sugar cubes and naturally seedless. A delightful dessert!! And it’s almost pomegranate season—the first ones are coming in, but everyone knows the best ones are a few weeks away.
---Wrapping a turban around your head is an amazing feat. I can barely tie a tie, and these guys are tying 2 yards of material around their head without looking. I’m impressed.
---It’s a small world, except when you are in Kandahar, it seems really really big, and it’s like you’re at the end—or at least a short walk from it.
The Afghans are pretty beat up. It would be nice if they could catch a break sometime soon.
