I was checking out our office yesterday, just going door to door, seeing who worked there. Behind door #3 were two little kids--one about 5, and a baby. Their mom is apparently our housecleaner, who brings them to work because her husband was disabled during one of the wars Afghanistan is always fighting.
I told mom not to wake the baby. But later, she brought the cute kid up to see me and I took this picture. I would have taken mom and baby, but there was no way mom was going to have her picture taken. So this is the kid, sans mom. Notice that babies in Afghanistan have a kind of eye liner around their eyes--I am not sure why, but it makes for an interesting look.

Babies in India as well...

Mothers would also apply kohl to their infants' eyes soon after birth. Some did this to "strengthen the child's eyes," and others believed it could prevent the child from being cursed by the "evil eye".[1]
Muslims today traditionally use kohl in an imitation of their Prophet, who was reported to use kohl every night before going to sleep.
