Istalif is a little secluded mountain village about 30 miles north of Kabul. It is--was--truly lovely, but then the Northern Alliance and the Taliban started beating the hell out of it, and each other. What is left now is mostly a pile of rubble, but with a great view.
Istalif has 2 things going for it. First, the park next to it is beautiful, and brings in a lot of people. Second, they have a 500 year old pottery tradition, around which they are trying to rebuild the city.
Below are some of the people we met and places we saw.
