The Citadel at Farah

We got to go out to the Citadel that overlooks the city at sunrise. It has a truly amazing history:

The Citadel at Farah is one of a series of fortresses constructed by Alexander the Great, the city being an intermediate stop between Herat, the location of another of Alexander's fortresses, and Kandahar. In the 5th century Farah was one of the major strongholds on the eastern frontier of the Sassanid Empire. It was sacked by the armies of Genghis Khan, and the survivors transported to a position to the north, where ruins remain. (Wikipedia)



This last picture, with the Citadel sitting in the upper-center is from Google Earth and shows how the Citadel dwarfs the neighborhoods that sit below it in Farah. You can click all of the pictures to have them enlarge.
