I have been in Farah less than 2 weeks, and already one thing is clear. The food sucks.
Now, I don’t normally complain about food. It isn’t that big a deal. But the cook we have, who seems to be a lovely guy with a big and constant smile, has a menu consisting of three main entrees:
• Red Beans and Rice
• Chickpeas and Rice
• Rice and Red Beans.
These delightful offerings are sometimes complimented by boiled and fatty mutton, of by boiled and tasteless chicken. Additionally, it seems bones are not to be removed, and instead they are just cut up into small pieces, so that no individual hunk of meat is distinguishable from another. It is basically meat on a bone—make that bones. I think he might have a deal with the state highway patrol (or the Taliban equivalent) to get road kill cheap, because everything looks like it was run over by a bus.
We had a try out for a new cook tonight. It seems hopeful, though the beef was done like shoe leather, and the baked potatoes were burned. But at least it was something different for a change.
Thank god for Jif.
