Muses

It’s Friday, and it is our day off, which is like announcing a day off at Folsom Prison but not turning anyone loose. We remain surrounded by guards and razor wire, though Shiv was able to take advantage of the cook’s day off by preparing some delightful green curry and fish, and he has promised us ice cream later. I like Shiv.

All of this isolation results in me listening to a lot of Johnny Cash while also being one of the most informed people in the world, as I mostly entertain myself checking out the news of the day. Obama’s speech in Copenhagen (go Chicago!!!), a Super Typhoon, a tsunami, Letterman boinking his staff, the Hoosier’s 3-1 start, Ryan Zimmerman’s two doubles in the last home game, the Rockies making the playoffs, Ovechkin’s big start, the wussy Democrats in the Senate, Padma’s pregnancy, John Boehner’s inability to find anyone in the US that doesn’t have health insurance, Ardi the new Missing Link, Maureen Dowd’s last snarky column, the EU vote in Ireland (a cliff hanger folks), and even rain cutting short the practice session at the Japanese Grand Prix (held at Suzaka, of course), are among the millions of things that I am prepared to discuss at length.

So as not to allow this extraordinary knowledge of things great and trivial to go to waste, and in recognition that most normal people may, unlike me, actually have a life, I thought it important to bring to your attention a great review of Song Muses that appears on the Daily Beast. (One note—I do wonder why, if you really do have a life you would be reading my blog. I think most visitors to the site are here by mistake, having Googled ‘get me out of Afghanistan’ and being so desperate that they will settle for ‘Around Afghanistan’. But I digress. Yes, I know ‘what’s new?’ Damn, I digress again. D’Oh).

So anyway, you may know there is a real Peggy Sue—but did you know ‘My Sharona’ is an actual girl? And that one woman was the muse for both Layla and Something Wonderful Tonight.  You can check out the story, and even hear a clip of the songs, here—make that hear it here .

Finally, a shout out to my own muse Dooz, who inspired my lyrics to “Amy Dooz, Amy Dooz, pretty pretty pretty pretty Amy Dooz”. She is far more creative than my lyrics, but I take full credit for introducing her to music, while she reciprocated by introducing me to joy. More than a fair deal.

Check out Dooz here http://amykbormet.blogspot.com/ and hear her at her new website, http://AmyKBormet.com/

yay! new website! what shiny pictures! my friend monica was disturbed by the fact you had me pose in traffic, and I told her it was a pattern of blatant photographic disregard for safety.

What person of our generation did NOT know that Layla was Patty Harrison? This fine "mockumentary" explains all: http://www.rutles.org/
