Lost in Translation

Just survived a 12+ hour flight from DC to Dubai that was an hour late leaving. Left about midnight, and now it is midnight again and I am dazed and confused in an Irish bar in Dubai.

The hotel is next to this outdoor mall of restaurants and bars. It is a strange mix of ex pats and the local upper middle income Dubaians (Dibaiis?) that are here. The Dubai guys are mostly having dinner and drinks with their families. The ex pats are mostly drinking.

Not surprisingly the place is largely populated by Brits, who build on the British tradition of drinking profuse amounts of beer and yelling 'foking' very loud. If I screwed up the world as much as these guys I think I would hide somewhere but they appear undaunted. Hanging with Brits at a bar is like hanging with a fraternity at a keggar--last guy standing loses. And they don't go quietly.

The place is eery in its normalness. The guitar player just finished 'Brown-Eyed Girl' and is 20 minutes into 'American Pie'. I could live without ever hearing again about the day the music died, as it has gotten very old and is demonstrably untrue. It also encourages people who are drunk to sing in a way that they feel melancholy and 'deep' but mostly just make dogs howl, as if they are trying to prove that music did indeed die.

I just heard a woman with Fran Drescher's laugh. Made my ears bleed.

Tomorrow I fly to Afghanistan. It is 2.5 hours and 200 years away. I am going to a Muslim country from a Muslim country and the difference could not be more profound. Note to Glenn Beck: all of Islam isn't the same.

Well shit--now a Kenny Rogers medley is the choice of the evening. I guess I will accept it as a sign from Allah--it is probably best that I fold 'em.

Not sure if I am playing Bill Murray or if he is playing me. Either way, I am clearly lost in a surreal place. I will check the morning paper--maybe my plane crashed and this is purgatory. That would explain all the Brits.
