No Shit—It’s Jiggy-Jiggy Night

Hassan is the guy who takes care of everything here, from cleaning rooms to scouring the town for Diet Pepsi. He worked at the military base for several years, and learned his English courtesy of the soldiers who probably liked him as much as I do. As a result, his favorite word is 'shit'. For instance:

  • He came back from a tough day off and declared 'my wife shit'.
  • His watch quit working—'my watch shit.'
  • He pointed at my deodorant a couple of weeks ago, and asked if I would bring him some from Kabul. "I smell shit'.
I came in today from Kabul and brought Hassan his deodorant. He was pretty happy. He said tonight was 'Friday' night (actually Thursday, but with no work tomorrow, he considers this Friday, just as he was taught by his peeps at the base). 'Friday night jiggy-jiggy night.' Then, holding up the deodorant and smiling, he said 'I dancing with my wife tonight. Very nice.'

Oh shit--I just remembered 'that's the shit' was first reported by Dooz, after attending a concert in DEEtroit (I think her freshman year). It was considered a compliment. 'You da shit'. Like bad or phat (the latter of which I never got comfortable with).
I think I will work with Hassan to transition shit from bad to good. I will have to work on what replaces it. The obvious f-bomb seems too crude. Maybe bullshit. So shit good and bullshit bad. I just don't know. Thank god these dilemmas keep my mind occupied out here.

I had a jazzy friend who really liked that phrase, and so we wanted to have it written on his birthday cookie cake, but the people at ms fields wouldn't do it, so we put it in french. tu est la merde! I think we went back for tessa's birthday cake and the hipper employee at ms fields made "tessa is the shit" happen. the word "the" is really integral. other wise it's still mean. you should tell him THE SHIT is good. LIKE SHIT is bad.
