Some have noticed that I had stopped blogging. I had decided not to blog until the Nats won. Not exactly a hunger strike, but a symbolic gesture nonetheless. Little did I know that it would be 10 days between wins—which is ok if you are a football team, but not good if you are a baseball team. We gotta get some pitching.Meanwhile, it is almost summer in Afghanistan. Kabul is like Denver—mountains, low humidity, warm days, high altitude, cool nights. We ate pizza and drank beer on the roof tonight, and it was really very nice.
We have moved into a new ‘villa’ (make that gulag, as we are surrounded by guards and unable to leave). Nice. New houses here are Pakistan-inspired, and a 13 room house costs monthly (in rent) about what my DC rowhouse costs for 6 months to buy. Craziness. They are huge, wedding-cake houses that look like palaces but live like barns. All of the toilets leak—on the bathroom floor. The windows don’t close, nor do the doors. A damn stray cat ran through last night and nearly scared me to death. I hate cats……
Luckily, we have internet. This means I get to listen to WPFW (nice Sly and the Family Stone tribute today at 4:00 AM) and currently Diane Rehm on WAMU. Kind of ‘comfort food’ for the ears. I also watched some AFI clips last night—in a Groucho Marx interview with Barbra Streisand I found out that her rivals for Funny Girl were Carol Burnett and Ann Bancroft. Fun facts!!!
I miss Memorial Day weekend. It’s the start of summer. Kind of something that is a part of the rhythm of life. I will have to satisfy myself with the start of summer in Kabul.
