Well, the election recount continues to drag out. It is clear that the election was filled with corruption, and that the outcome was decided before voting began.
While the International press seems to think that there is a real possibility of an Iran-style protest when the inevitable results are announced, I am not so sure. No one here really seems to pre-occupied with the results.
The feeling of many is probably best reflected by an educated and successful Afghan who I had dinner with the other night. When I asked him about the election he said, “I don’t know what all the bother is about. Everyone knew that Karzai would cheat and win the election. There is no point in dragging it out in a recount. He will just win again. Let’s just move on.”
In a country with no real democratic tradition, folks may not be all that upset when elections are stolen and not won, for they really have little concept—and no expectation— of anything else.
